Overcoming the Humble Gene

I finished reading Oversubscribed by Daniel Priestly. In the book he talks about being a “Key Person of Influence” and the concept that, in many cases, a personal brand is much more powerful than a generic brand. This means that if you are a business owner and you want to grow your business you will need to promote yourself and “Be” the brand of your business.

The problem is that this goes against a lot of beliefs that people hold very closely to themselves. I’ve also had this challenge myself. As a Born Again and Spirit Filled Christian, I am very familiar with Philippians Chapter 2 verse 3 that says “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”  This has always led me to believe that promoting myself was, in some way, “Selfish Ambition,” and therefore I resisted doing it myself. I also never actively advocated my clients doing it for their business.

What changed for me was the fact that I realized that I have a lot of good ideas and concepts that I could share with business owners that will have a substantial positive impact on their lives. So why was I hiding all these concepts? Was it because I developed the “Humble Gene” and told myself that I shouldn’t put myself out there and work at becoming well known? To be honest, that is EXACTLY what happened.

So, my question to you is, have you developed a “Humble Gene?” Are you refusing to put yourself out there to the world because you’d rather live in the shadows and hope that your message, somehow, makes it out into the world?

The key to overcoming your “Humble Gene” is to ask yourself “Why would I want to become famous and be a Person of Influence?” If your answer deep in your heart is some form of “I want to help people have a better life” in whatever way, shape, or form you have with your offering, then there is no reason to have your Humble Gene stop you from that mission.

Even Jesus said in Mark 4:21 “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?" Maybe it’s time for you to stop being the lamp under the bowl or bed and shine your light out into the world to do good for whatever you have been called to do.

3 Areas in Your Business That Stop You From Growing

It’s very rare that a business owner does not want to grow their business. Sure, some are resistant to growth as it scares them, but when I ask a business owner if they would like to double their profits over the next several years they always say “Yes.” That “Yes” involves growth. And yet so many business owners who want growth just can’t seem to push the needle forward, and their growth stalls out, or never happens...
